Amazon cuts 9,000 more jobs, bringing 2023 total to 27,000

In a Monday message to employees, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced the company’s intention to remove 9,000 additional positions in the coming weeks.

The job losses would be the second largest round of layoffs in the company’s history, following the January announcement that the tech giant will lay off 18,000 people. During the epidemic, the company’s employment increased, despite a hiring boom in practically the entire IT industry.

This year, IT businesses have announced tens of thousands of layoffs.

In the message, Jassy said that the new layoffs were the result of the second part of the company’s yearly planning process, which was concluded this month. He stated that Amazon will continue recruit in some important regions.

“Some may wonder why we did not disclose these position reductions with those revealed a few months ago. The simple explanation is that not all teams had completed their analysis by late fall; and rather than hurry through these evaluations without due care, we preferred to disclose these choices as they were made so that individuals have the information as soon as possible,” Jassy explained.

The Monday-announced layoffs will impact the company’s most profitable divisions, including AWS and its expanding advertising business. Amazon’s gaming platform Twitch and Amazon’s PXT businesses, which manage human resources and other tasks, will also experience layoffs.
