Are you a Facebook user? You could get some settlement cash

Since May 24, 2007, anyone in the United States who has had a Facebook account can now apply for a portion of the $725 million privacy settlement that Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has agreed to pay.

Meta is paying to resolve a lawsuit alleging that the world’s largest social media platform allowed Cambridge Analytica, a firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, access to the confidential information of millions of its users.

It is unknown how much money each user will receive. The greater the number of individuals submitting valid claims, the smaller each payment will be due to the need to divide the total amount among them.

To file for the settlement, users can complete out and submit a form online, or they can print and mail the form.

The case stemmed from 2018 revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a company with connections to Trump political strategist Steve Bannon, had paid a Facebook app developer for access to the personal information of approximately 87 million platform users. This information was then used to target American voters during the 2016 campaign that resulted in the election of Donald Trump as the 45th president.

The scandal caused Zuckerberg to be interrogated by U.S. legislators and prompted demands for Facebook users to delete their accounts.

Facebook’s growth has slowed as more people connect and amuse themselves on rival services such as TikTok, but the social network still has more than 2 billion users globally, including an estimated 250 million in the United States.
